The role played by musical wind instruments in changes of the dento-maxillary apparatus
Due to changes in muscle function, musical wind instruments can cause malocclusions or may be used to correct others.
They can play a responsible part in the etiology of malocclusions but they can have a therapeutic role as well.
A study conducted by the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry and Oral Health in 1994 and resumed later on in 2014 on the pupils from the High School of Music in Timisoara who played wind instruments showed that 53.05% and respectively 55% of the examined children presented malocclusions.
There is no question of mass prophylaxis because there are not many wind instrument-players, but the ones who are should undertake particular preventive measures, they need to be educated and sensitized about the risks of developing malocclusions.
In such cases, there is an indication for directed myo-gymnastics as well as regular orthodontic check-ups.
